Indoor Día de Muertos celebration with a Catrina contest for adults and children, an ofrenda exhibition, a Catrina procession, mariachi and live music.
Indiana Discount Mall is hosting its Día de Muertos Catrina Contest on Sunday, November 1, from 2 PM to 5 PM. The day centers on the Catrina contest, which is split into two categories: an adult one with a $1,500 prize and a children's category for ages 5 to 14 with a $500 prize. Beyond the competition, there's an ofrenda exhibition, a Catrina procession, mariachi, and performances by DJ Tencho Camacho and MC Betty Blue.
For context, Día de Muertos—or Day of the Dead—is celebrated on November 1 and 2 in Mexico and across much of Latin America, with roots going back thousands of years to Indigenous traditions. Families build ofrendas, or altars, covered with photos of loved ones who have died, candles, sweets, marigolds, and the foods and drinks those people loved, to welcome their spirits home. At community celebrations, children usually connect with the holiday through crafts, face painting, and the Catrinas—people dressed and painted as elegant skeletons. The indoor market turns the day into a competition, and if you want to enter, you'll need to register ahead of time by texting 833-201-1970 or using the form on the mall's Catrina contest page.
