Artist Jim Walker invites library visitors to share their hopes and dreams, record their voices and build soundscapes from them for the Making Together series.
Jim Walker brings his project What I'd Say to the Garfield Park Branch on Monday, November 16, from 1 PM to 3 PM. It's part of Making Together, the Indianapolis Public Library's collaborative project marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The session is built around you. Walker offers prompts and questions that encourage people to share their hopes, dreams, and visions, and he records your voice as you talk. From there, he uses digital and analogue tools—everything from a laptop to a salt shaker—to build accompanying soundscapes around the recordings. The resulting audio pieces air on WQRT 99.1 FM, Indianapolis's art and community radio station, and are available online via QR codes on signage and small displays in library branches.
The venue has its own history. The Garfield Park Branch was formerly the Shelby Branch, and it dates back to 1918 when the library occupied old School No. 34. A new building opened at the current Shelby Street site in 1965, and it reopened in 2011 after a major renovation. You can find it at 2502 Shelby Street, Indianapolis, IN 46203.

It's a drop-in session on a Monday afternoon, so you can stop by for a bit or hang out for the whole two hours. If you've got something on your mind you'd like to hear turned into a soundscape, this is your chance to put it on tape. The session runs from 1 PM to 3 PM at the Garfield Park Branch.
