Introductory chess session for school-age children and teenagers, part of a six-week series of classes.
Chess for Beginners is coming to the College Avenue Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Saturday, October 24, from 1 PM to 2 PM. It's an introductory session for school-age kids and teenagers, led by Coach Michael.
This isn't a one-off. The session is part of a six-week series of chess classes for kids and teens, built around family-friendly instruction, puzzles, and play. If you've got a younger one who's never touched a board, this is a good place to start. The library strongly encourages registration, so it's worth getting your spot sorted ahead of time rather than just showing up.
The venue itself has a long neighborhood history. The College Avenue Branch first opened in 1924 as the Broadway Branch, which served the area from a frame house on East 42nd Street until 1958, when a 6,500-square-foot facility opened on Broadway Street. That building eventually grew too small and overcrowded and was replaced in August 2000 by the current 16,000-square-foot structure on College Avenue, renamed the College Avenue Branch. It's a familiar spot for a lot of families around here.
