Chair yoga health and wellness class for seniors and adults, focusing on breathing, heart rate, mental focus and relaxation, in partnership with the Jordan YMCA.
Chair Yoga comes to the Nora Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on Tuesday, December 29, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It's a health and wellness class presented by the Jordan YMCA, and it's aimed at seniors and adults. The whole point of chair yoga is that you do the movements while seated, so it's a good option if you can't get down on a mat or just prefer to stay off the floor.
The session focuses on breathing techniques and improving your heart rate, mental focus, and relaxation. It's less about pushing yourself and more about slowing things down, so it works well if you're looking for something gentle to start your day with. Since it's a partnership between the library and the YMCA, it's a community-led class rather than a private gym session.
There's some local history behind the two organizations. The Jordan YMCA is a 65,800-square-foot center that opened in 1959, and it's been serving the Nora and Broad Ripple neighborhoods for more than half a century. It sits along the Monon Trail with a pocket park at the trailhead, and inside it houses indoor and outdoor pools, a wellness center, and a Play & Learn childcare center. The host venue, the Nora Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library, opened in 1971 on a 2.56-acre lot donated by Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Eiteljorg in 1968, and it was expanded to 18,500 square feet in 1990.
