Free and open weekly chess club for all ages and skill levels, with an unrated blitz tournament from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Central Library atrium.
Books & Rooks is back at the Central Library this Monday, October 26, as part of its weekly chess night. It's a free and open club for anyone interested in the game, from people who play a lot online and watch streamers to those new to chess looking to try live, in-person play. All ages and skill levels are welcome, and you don't need a USCF membership to join in.
If you're in the mood for something a bit more structured, there's an unrated blitz tournament from 6 PM to 8 PM. Blitz is the fast-paced version of the game, so it's a good way to get a few games in over a couple of hours. Otherwise, the night is mostly casual play, and you can drop in whenever you like.
The club meets in the Atrium of the Central Library, the hub of the Indianapolis Public Library system. The original 1917 building was designed by Paul Cret and built of Indiana limestone in the Greek Doric style, and it's considered one of the most outstanding secular buildings in the U.S. A six-story glass and steel-framed addition by Evans Woollen opened in 2007, so the Atrium sits right where the old limestone meets the newer glass.
