Free outdoor screening of 'The Hobbit' (2012) under the stars at Market Square Park, part of the Movies Under the Stars series.
The Hobbit is playing outdoors at Market Square Park on Thursday, November 12, as part of the Movies Under the Stars series presented by Downtown Houston+. It's a free screening, so you don't need a ticket to show up.
The movie is the 2012 version, rated PG-13. It follows Bilbo Baggins, a reluctant Hobbit who gets swept up in an adventure with a spirited group of dwarves. They're heading for the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their home and the gold inside from the dragon Smaug. It's a long journey, and the movie is just the beginning of the story.
Since it's an outdoor screening, the whole thing is meant to be a bit of a night out. The organizers encourage you to grab takeout from one of the restaurants around the park and bring a lawn blanket to watch the film under the Downtown Houston skyline. It's a casual setup—just you, your food, and a blanket on the grass.

Market Square Park itself has a deep history with the city. It's been at the heart of Houston since the city was founded, and over the years it housed four different City Hall buildings. At one point it was a parking lot, but it was turned back into a green space in the 1970s with support from the Junior League of Houston. It reopened in 2010 after a major renovation led by Downtown Houston+ along with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department and other community stakeholders, and these days it's a hub for live entertainment, public art, and cultural programming. The screening runs from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, and admission is free.
