A comedic, improvised theatre show where a cast member takes shots of hard liquor before performing a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula with audience interaction.
The Drunk Shakespeare Society is bringing Drunk Dracula to The Emerald Theatre in downtown Houston, and it's running through Sunday, November 8. The show is about 90 minutes with no intermission, so you're in and out in one go.
Here's how it works: at the start, one cast member is designated to take four shots of hard liquor. From there, they follow a different set of rules than the rest of the company, including taking orders from a royal couple chosen from the audience. The rest of the cast improvises around Bram Stoker's classic with games and audience interaction throughout. And it's not just the stageβthe whole room gets a drink, too.
The society describes itself as genuine Shakespeare performed by professionals rather than a comedy that borrows from the Bard, and it's billing this Houston run as a new Halloween tradition for the city. The Emerald Theatre, located at 412 Travis Street in the Theatre District, adds to the vibe with its speakeasy feel and a full cocktail bar on site. This isn't their only production, either; the company also stages Drunk Macbeth, Drunk Treasure Island, and Drunk Christmas Carol.
