Special presentation with astronaut Karen Nyberg, a children's story time, and a book signing for the picture book 'A Quilt of Stars'.
Astronaut Karen Nyberg is coming back to Space Center Houston on Saturday, November 14, for a special presentation and book signing celebrating A Quilt of Stars: Astronaut Karen Nyberg Stitches a Dream. It's a picture book she co-wrote with children's author Ann McCallum Staats, illustrated by Alida Massari, and the whole afternoon is built around it.
Nyberg's story is a Houston one. She started her NASA career as an engineer at the Johnson Space Center and flew to space twice, spending 166 days aboard the International Space Station. While she was up there, she hand-sewed a star quilt block and invited quilters around the world to join her. Thousands of star blocks arrived from more than 30 countries, and they became the Astronomical Quilts. Staats has spent more than two decades writing for children, and together they turned that experience into this book.
The afternoon moves through a few different spots. It kicks off at 12:30 PM in the Mission Briefing Center with a fireside chat featuring Nyberg, moderated by astronaut Megan McArthur. At 1:30 PM, the action shifts to the Destiny Theater for Story Time, with a book signing following that. If you're bringing kids, there's also a 'Dream Like a Star' activity running from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
