Punk-rock show by Penny & the Pits, the new project of Penelope Stevens, within the LOUD WOMEN Fest Halifax.
Penny & the Pits play the Seahorse Tavern on Saturday, October 24, as part of LOUD WOMEN Fest Halifax. It's the new project of Penelope Stevens, a Maritime stalwart who's spent years working across the region's art and music underground. You might know her as one third of the art-rock band Motherhood, or from her work as an organiser, collaborator and visual artist in New Brunswick's weird art scene. This is her stepping out front.
Her debut album, Liquid Compactor, puts her voice centre stage. It's a gritty, adventurous punk-rock record that works through feminist joy, rage and revenge, and Stevens describes it as a celebration of healing cloaked as a gnarly romp. The sound sits in the Riot Grrrl tradition — loud, direct, and not afraid to be abrasive. If you're into punk, alternative rock, or anything that leans into the raw energy of the Riot Grrrl era, this is exactly that. The set will draw from Liquid Compactor, so you'll be hearing the new material live.
The show is part of LOUD WOMEN Fest Halifax, which returns to the city for its second year after a sold-out first edition. The festival brings together an eclectic line-up of women and non-binary artists from Nova Scotia, across Canada and the UK, with this date being one of the nights in the city. Stevens herself hails from Saint John, New Brunswick, so there's a bit of a Maritime connection running through the whole thing.
