A heartwarming shadow puppetry show for families, telling the story of a lonely witch and an egg through humour and audience engagement.
The Witch And The Egg plays at the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November. It's part of the Luminous Tales programme, and the story comes from Madeleine Edmondson's book The Witch's Egg.
It's a simple premise: a lonely old witch finds an egg that sends her on an adventure that changes her life. The show is told through shadow puppetry, with a single performer and a flock of puppets carrying the whole thing. Luminous Tales describes it as a mix of humour and audience engagement, so it's the kind of thing that works best with a room full of people rather than just watching it on a screen.
The venue itself is a bit of a hidden gem in the West End. The Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre combines an 80-seat theatre with a museum and an education unit, and it houses a huge mask and puppet library and archive. There are permanent exhibition areas, a cafe, a film and FX unit, a mask studio, and a marionette carving workshop. They also run a regular Saturday Show programme of workshops and birthday parties for families, and they tour exhibitions to museums and galleries across the UK and Ireland.
