A glove puppet adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale performed by Clive Chandler at the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre.
Clive Chandler brings The Snow Queen to the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre on Saturday 14 November, part of the venue's regular family Saturday Show programme that runs from September through June. It's Chandler's own adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, and he's staging it with glove puppets.
If you're not familiar with the venue, it's a bit of a West End curiosity. The Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre is a theatre, a museum, and an education unit all under one roof, with an 80-seat auditorium at its heart. Beyond the stage, it houses an extensive mask and puppet library and archive, permanent exhibition areas, a cafe, a mask studio, and a marionette carving workshop. The Saturday shows sit alongside touring exhibitions like The Magic of Masks & Puppets and Behind The Mask, so there's plenty to see around the theatre if you arrive early.
As for the show itself, The Snow Queen is a seasoned puppeteer's take on one of Andersen's most famous stories. Chandler handles the adaptation and the performance, bringing the icy world to life with glove puppets—the kind where the puppeteer's hand goes inside the puppet to move it, rather than using rods or strings. It's a classic of the fairy tale canon, and having it performed by a puppeteer who's been at it for years gives it a particular kind of craft.
