A hard-hitting, unfrilled and non-triumphalist account of Martin Hurson, a young man from Tyrone who died on hunger-strike in Long Kesh, written by Gerry Cunningham.
The Martin Hurson Story comes to The Pavilion Theatre on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 March 2027, with both nights starting at 7.30pm. It's written by Gerry Cunningham, the author of Blood Upon The Rose, and it's staged with a full cast.
The play follows Martin Hurson, a young man from the Cappagh/Galbally area of Tyrone who died on 13 July 1981 after 46 days on hunger-strike in Long Kesh, the Maze. He was the sixth person to die on hunger-strike, following Bobby Sands, Francis Hughes, Ray McCreesh, Patsy O'Hara and Joe McDonnell.
It traces his arrest and brutal interrogation in Omagh Barracks, his sentence, his part in the no-wash protests and his decision to join the second hunger-strike in May 1981. Cunningham describes the production as a hard-hitting, unfrilled and non-triumphalist account of those days, with no happy ending or glorification. It's a straightforward look at the timeline of those months, from the interrogation room to the hunger-strike, without polishing the edges.
