Weekly Sunday session of mixed-gender Touch Rugby played by The Glasgow Chickens on Glasgow Green, open to all ages and abilities.
The Glasgow Chickens run touch rugby every Sunday morning at Glasgow Green, from 11am to 12.30pm. It's a mixed-gender club that takes in all ages and abilities, from absolute beginners to players who've been selected for national teams, so you don't need to have a rugby background to get involved.
If you've never come across it, touch rugby is a non-contact version of the sport. Instead of tackling, players wear shorts with velcro patches and two tags attached; defenders score by 'tagging' the ball carrier. It started in Australia as a training aid for rugby league teams, invented by former St George Dragons halfback Perry Haddock while he was coaching the 1992 St George under-20s.
On the pitch, the club fields three teams for league play: the mixed team, The Chickens; the ladies' team, The Hens; and the men's team, The Cocks. Each 90-minute session always finishes with a game, and members often stay for a drink or a coffee afterwards. Beyond the pitch, the club runs social events throughout the year and also meets in Stepps on Tuesday evenings.
