A brand-new version of the classic tale packed with Glasgow wit and a musical heart, starring Elaine C Smith and Johnny Mac.
Aladdin opens at The King's Theatre on Saturday 21 November, running through to Sunday 3 January. It's a brand-new version of the classic tale, built around Glasgow wit and a musical heart, and it follows the cast's turn in last year's The Little Mermaid.
Elaine C Smith leads the cast as Mother Goose, and Johnny Mac takes the title role of Aladdin. Smith has headlined some of Scotland's biggest pantomimes for over 20 years, with roles like Mary Nesbitt in Rab C. Nesbitt and Christine in Two Doors Down, which won her a BAFTA in 2019. Darren Brownlie is back for his sixth panto at The King's, best known as Mikey Duffy in BBC Scotland's River City, and he plays the Spirit of the Ring. Hannah Jarrett-Scott returns for a third year as the Wicked Witch, with credits including Outlander, Two Doors Down, Annika and Scot Squad. The rest of the cast includes Blythe Jandoo as Princess Jemima, Gordon Cooper as Old King Cole and Rushand Chambers as the Genie.
Crossroads Pantomimes, billed as the world's biggest pantomime producer, has staged the Glasgow panto at The King's since 2017. The venue itself has mounted more than 50 pantomimes since 1904, including Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This version promises mesmerising sets and costumes, genie-us effects and the boos, hisses and laughter panto audiences expect. One thing to keep in mind: it contains flashing lights.
