A fantastical shadow puppet show by Luminous Tales performed in a scrolling illuminated shadow box machine called a crankie, suitable for children aged 3 and above.
Luminous Tales bring Stars In The Sky to The Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre on Sunday 1 November, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. It's a shadow puppet show performed inside a crankie — a scrolling, illuminated shadow box machine. The stars glow as the light comes on, and the puppets leap across the scrolling background, sometimes even flying out of the box and onto a large paper screen.
The story follows an old lady who wants to play with the stars, and along the way she meets characters from world myths: Orion, the Great Bear and the Little Bear. The soundtrack mixes music boxes played live with original recorded tracks inspired by them. Zannie Fraser of Luminous Tales has been designing, making and performing shadow theatre for family audiences for twenty years, with original music by Bob Percy.
It's suitable for children aged three and up, and there's more to it than just the show. Afterwards, the audience can ask questions, find out how a crankie actually works and invent their own adventures among the stars. The Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre itself is a West End theatre, museum and education unit, with an extensive mask and puppet library and archive, a mask studio and a marionette carving workshop.
