A specialist tour exploring images of the Devil from the museum's collection, featuring works by William Blake, James Elder Christie and Niki de Saint Phalle, suitable for all ages.
Specialist Tour: The Devil runs at the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre on Tuesday 15 December, starting at 2:30pm. It's one of those rare chances to get inside the Resource Centre rather than the main galleries, and the focus is on a single, enduring figure: the Devil.
The tour works its way through the many names and shapes the Devil has taken across history and art, from the fallen rebel angel Lucifer to a goat-legged demon and a seven-headed dragon. It's not just a talk, either — you'll get to handle images of Satan drawn from the museum's own collection of print, painting and sculpture, so you're seeing the work up close rather than from behind a barrier. The session is built for all ages, so it's as much for families as for anyone with a passing interest in art history.
Among the works on display are pieces by William Blake, James Elder Christie and Niki de Saint Phalle, three artists from very different eras and traditions, all taking a turn at the same subject. Seeing them side by side is a good way to see how the image has shifted over the centuries, from the romantic and the classical to the modern.
