Community exhibition of artworks from the Mental Health Foundation's project on the mental health impact of racism, co-curated with workshop participants.
Reclaiming Our Power is showing at the Gallery of Modern Art from Saturday 10 October to Sunday 13 December, and it's free to get in. It's an exhibition that comes out of a Mental Health Foundation project looking at the mental health impact of racism, with a particular focus on racist microaggressions.
The whole thing started with creative peer-support workshops, led by people with lived experience. People from racialised communities worked alongside artists who also have lived experience of racism, across a range of disciplines. What they made covers a lot of ground: textiles, poetry, ceramics, screen printing, drawing and painting. A steering group of those workshop participants co-curated the exhibition with GoMA staff to make sure their everyday experience was conveyed with the most impact, and the work is shown in the gallery's community exhibition space.
There's more to it than the show itself. Six volunteers from the workshops also helped the Foundation develop a free, open-access online resource for professionals in education, healthcare and transport on how to recognise and respond to microaggressions. The exhibition is presented as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival 2026, which returns for its 20th year with the theme 'Reflections'.
