Free drop-in exhibition by Turner Prize winner Duncan Campbell, the final commission of GoMA's 30th anniversary programme, featuring a flip-disc electromagnetic screen.
Duncan Campbell's A New No opens at the Gallery of Modern Art on Saturday 10 October, and it's the final commission of GoMA's 30th anniversary programme. It's also the first major work by the Turner Prize winner to be shown in a Scottish institution since 2014, so it's been a while since he's had a proper homecoming like this.
At the centre of the piece is a flip-disc electromagnetic screen that animates graphic images using the '12 principles of animation' formulated by Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson. The flip-dot technology itself was first installed at the Montreal Stock Exchange to create a picture-story of market values over time, and here it's set against the opulent neoclassical architecture of the former Royal Exchange. A single narrator's voice roams the gallery as a counterpoint to the screen, so you're hearing one thing while watching another.
Campbell has lived and worked in Glasgow since the mid-1990s, when he moved to the city to complete a Masters at The Glasgow School of Art, and he represented Scotland at the 2013 Venice Biennale. A New No was originally commissioned for Glasgow International in 2020 with the support of the Sfumato Foundation and Art Fund, so it's a work that's been in the making for a few years now.
