The Royal Shakespeare Company's award-winning musical inspired by Roald Dahl's book runs at the Theatre Royal Glasgow.
Matilda the Musical returns to the Theatre Royal Glasgow from Wednesday 18 November to Saturday 5 December, with a new cast taking over the roles. It's the Royal Shakespeare Company's multi-award-winning production, based on Roald Dahl's book, and it's been on stage for fifteen years since it first opened at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. Over that time it's played in a hundred cities across seventeen countries to more than twelve million people and picked up over a hundred awards, including twenty-four for Best Musical and seven Oliviers at the 2012 awards.
The story follows an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination, a sharp mind and psychokinetic powers, befriends the kind teacher Miss Honey and foils the plans of the callous headmistress Miss Trunchbull and her own selfish parents. It's a tale of a small child taking on the adults who think they can push her around, and it's the part that's stuck with most people. The Daily Telegraph called it 'the best British musical of the 21st century' and Rolling Stone described it as 'unique and unforgettable'.
There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you book. The production uses flashing lights, lasers, loud sound effects, latex balloons popped onstage and stage haze, and the actors work in the audience spaces, so it's not suitable for children under six. If you're planning a family trip, that's the one detail that really matters.
