A family workshop where participants design and build their own automata, learning how to make them move with the turn of a handle.
Colleen Magennis is running a family workshop called Love Automata at the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre on Saturday 17 October. Magennis is a puppeteer with the centre, and the session is an introduction to the basic mechanics of automata: the kind of mechanical figures that move when you turn a handle. You'll design and build your own from scratch, figuring out how to make it twist, jump and twirl with a turn of the handle.
It's a family workshop, so it works as a thing to do with kids over the October half term, but it's open to adults too. All the materials you'll need are provided, so you don't have to bring anything with you. The session is suitable for children aged 8 and over, and adults are welcome to join in as well — they just need to buy a ticket to take part.
