A family-friendly outdoor event exploring the history of fire-fighting with vintage vehicles and fire-fighting machines at the Riverside Museum.
The Festival of Fire returns to the Riverside Museum on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, brought back by the Scottish Fire Brigades Heritage Trust and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in collaboration with Glasgow Museums. It's an outdoor, family-friendly event, so it's one you can bring the kids along to.
The main draw is the fire engines. You'll find firefighting machines from both the past and present on display, and you can climb aboard the vintage vehicles rather than just looking at them from a distance. It's a good way to see how the kit has changed over the years, with the older machines sitting alongside the modern ones.
The setting is the Riverside Museum at 100 Pointhouse Place in the West End, Glasgow's technology and transport museum. It opened in 2011 in a Zaha Hadid building at the junction of the Rivers Kelvin and Clyde, and inside it holds more than 3,000 objects, from bicycles and cars to a 100-ton Class 15F steam engine, as well as about a quarter of Glasgow's ship model collection. Outside, the Tall Ship Glenlee is moored up, the UK's only floating Clyde-built sailing ship.
