Fat Freddy's Drop perform their debut album 'Based On A True Story' live at the O2 Academy Glasgow, continuing their tour across the UK.
Fat Freddy's Drop play the O2 Academy Glasgow on Sunday 25 October, performing their debut album Based On A True Story in full. It's part of a 51-date tour running through Australia, Aotearoa, Europe and the UK, and their first since the sudden death of founding member Chris 'MU' Faiumu. The band have decided to keep going, and lead singer Dallas Tamaira says playing the album live is part of honouring MU's intentions.
Based On A True Story came out independently in 2005, a collection of ten future-funk tracks that became Aotearoa's longest-charting album, spending 111 weeks in the Top 40. It picked up eight NZ Music Awards and took out Giles Peterson's Worldwide Music Awards in the UK. Hearing it played through from start to finish is a different thing from having it on the turntable, and it's the focus of the whole night.
For those who haven't followed them, Fat Freddy's Drop come from Wellington, New Zealand, and have been around since the early Noughties. They started in sunshine reggae and moved through a colour-saturated field of soul psychedelia to a sound that mixes jazz virtuosity with digital sonics. They've built a reputation as one of the world's finest live draws, and this tour is their first since MU passed.
