A contemporary cross-artform work exploring the interconnections between the crisis of ecology and the crisis of masculinity through dance, music and performance.
Hanna Tuulikki brings Deer Dancer to Tramway on Saturday 28 November, a cross-artform study of our relationship with deer that starts with mimesis and representation in dance. A quintet of performers take turns playing five hybrid characters, gesturing, lip-syncing, dancing and singing while undressing and redressing into costume, moving between 'wild-deer-ness' and performed male-ness. The work asks how the imitation of deer behaviour constructs ideas of 'wilderness' as the site for cultivating heroic hetero-masculinities, and how hunting mythologies shape real, often vulnerable ecologies. Tuulikki frames the whole thing as an explicit contemporary life-crisis ritual for a damaged planet.
On stage, that ritual takes a physical, atmospheric shape. Low light, prolonged darkness and stylised depictions of weapons and death round out the staging. The reviews it's picked up so far give a sense of the tone: The List called it 'playful and meticulously crafted', Hettie Judah in the i newspaper 'funny, sweet, beautiful and poignant', and The Spectator 'a confident, elegantly produced and richly-layered work'.
Tuulikki is the lead artist, performer and composer, and she co-composed the piece with Kim Moore. It's performed by a quintet of performers, so the five hybrid characters are shared across the group rather than played by five separate people. The venue is Tramway, a vast former tram depot on Glasgow's Southside that's become an internationally renowned arts space, known for staging cutting-edge theatre, dance and visual art in its cavernous industrial rooms, with a programme that leans towards the experimental.
