Momi Maiga brings a blend of Senegalese musical tradition and contemporary global influences to Celtic Connections 2027.
Momi Maiga plays Tramway on Saturday 23 January, part of the World Connections programme for Celtic Connections 2027. He's a Senegalese kora player, singer and songwriter, and the set brings together West African tradition and contemporary global influences.
Maiga is a virtuoso of the 22-string kora, the harp-lute of the Mandé people, and he draws on his family's griot heritage — the hereditary caste of praise singers and oral historians in West African society. From that foundation, he weaves in jazz, flamenco and other West African traditions, so the music reaches well beyond the kora on its own. He sings as well, and the set combines those kora melodies with expansive vocals.
There's a particular thread running through the songs, too. Maiga describes his work as rooted in tradition but modern in its outlook, and he writes around themes of migration, resilience and hope. It's the kind of music that stays grounded in its origins while pulling in sounds from across the world, and he's known for a strong stage presence and a certain sensitivity to the room.
