Illustrated talk by Senior Curator Heather Robertson on the Glasgow Salaam Festival truck art van by Afshan Abid.
Riverside Museum is hosting an illustrated talk on Friday 23 October, with Senior Curator Heather Robertson taking the lead. The subject is a particular piece of the museum's collection: a Daihatsu Hijet van transformed in the vibrant tradition of South Asian truck art by artist Afshan Abid, who worked on it alongside Glasgow art students. It dates back to the Salaam Festival of 1997, where it was one of the festival's standout projects, and it's now on display at the museum.
Robertson will draw on the Glasgow Salaam Festival 1997 archives to recount the story of the project, and she'll also bring in examples of genuine truck art held at the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre to give some wider context. If you've seen the van on display at the museum, this is a chance to hear the history behind it rather than just walking past. The session is part of the Glasgow Museums programme and is suitable for all ages, so it works as a family outing as much as a solo visit.
