The Piccadilly Sinfonietta perform Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending by candlelight at the historic St Giles' Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are playing Vivaldi's The Four Seasons by candlelight at St Giles' Cathedral on 31 October, with the concert starting at 20:00. It's a candlelight performance, so the cathedral will be lit by candles rather than the usual house lights.
The programme puts The Four Seasons alongside Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, which was written on the eve of the First World War and takes its title and inspiration from George Meredith's poem. Mozart appears twice: the energetic Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and the elegant Flute Quartet in D, which he wrote for a wealthy amateur flautist. Between them, the set runs from the high Baroque of Vivaldi through the early twentieth century and back to the Classical era, with the solo violin and flute taking the lead across the night.
St Giles' Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is the Gothic landmark on the Royal Mile with the crown steeple, and it's still an active place of worship. The concert is presented by Candlelight Concerts, which operates independently of the Fever Original Candlelight series. Seating is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis within each ticket band, so if you have a preference for where you sit, it pays to get there early.
