Candlelight concert by The Piccadilly Sinfonietta with pianist Warren Mailley-Smith, pairing Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite with Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are playing St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 28 November, with pianist Warren Mailley-Smith joining them. It's part of the cathedral's candlelight concert series, so the whole thing is performed by candlelight inside the building on the Royal Mile in the Old Town.
The programme puts two big names together: Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, with a traditional festive medley to round it off. The Nutcracker is the one most of us know from the ballet, and Rachmaninov's second concerto is one of the great romantic works for piano and orchestra. The medley brings in the more familiar Christmas tunes that usually come with this kind of evening.
Behind the music is the Piccadilly Sinfonietta, an ensemble that puts on more than 200 performances a year and has become a regular on the British classical scene. They're known for their vibrant and expressive takes on the standard repertoire, and Classic FM has described their playing as 'stunning'. Warren Mailley-Smith takes the piano for the Rachmaninov, and the Sinfonietta handles the rest.
