The Piccadilly Sinfonietta perform Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and Beethoven's Violin Concerto by candlelight in the historic St Giles' Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are playing St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 26 June 2027, as part of the Evening Concert Series. The main event is Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, and they're pairing it with Beethoven's Violin Concerto.
The Four Seasons is one of those cornerstones of the classical canon that almost everyone recognises, even if they've never stepped foot in a concert hall. It's a vivid, revolutionary work that captures the changing seasons with a fair bit of virtuosity and emotional weight. Hearing it in a candlelit St Giles' Cathedral adds another layer to it β the cathedral is a Church of Scotland parish church in the Old Town, on the Royal Mile, with a building that started in the 14th century and was extended through to the 16th.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are an acclaimed ensemble that puts on more than 200 performances a year, so they're a mainstay of the British classical scene. They specialise in the concerto repertoire of the baroque, classical and early romantic periods, and they regularly bring in some of the UK's most gifted virtuosi to lead them. For this one, they'll be joined by a leading violin soloist. Classic FM has described their playing as 'stunning'.
