Workshop led by visible mending artist Natalie Arnold to repair and celebrate worn clothes using simple stitches inspired by sashiko.
Natalie Arnold is running a visible mending workshop at The Pitt on Thursday 22 October, from 6pm to 8pm. If you've got a favourite jumper with a hole in the elbow or a pair of trousers that have seen better days, this is the kind of thing you bring along. The whole point of visible mending is to fix your clothes in a way that shows rather than hides the repair, turning a tear or a snag into a feature rather than a flaw.
Arnold works with simple stitches to repair, strengthen and celebrate the clothes you love, and the session draws on the Japanese tradition of sashiko. It's about taking worn and damaged fabrics and turning them into something unique, extending their life while adding a personal touch. You're encouraged to bring your own clothes that need fixing, though all the materials you'll need are provided on the night, so you don't have to turn up with a sewing kit if you haven't one.
The workshop also doubles as a chance to try out the new Craft Hub at The Pitt market in Granton. The market is an entrepreneurial hub described as an open, safe, collaborative space for the whole community, and it houses a food court, a bar and a sauna, with a view across the Firth of Forth. It's a bit of a destination in its own right, so you could easily make an evening of it and stay on after the sewing is done.
