The musical adaptation of Irvine Welsh's 1993 novel returns to the Edinburgh Playhouse, charting a group of young people caught in the grip of addiction and poverty in 1990s Edinburgh.
Trainspotting: The Musical opens at the Edinburgh Playhouse on Monday 19 October, running through to Saturday 24 October. It's a short run, and it's a homecoming of sorts: the story is set in 1990s Edinburgh, and the production arrives here after a UK tour that premiered in the West End at London's Theatre Royal Haymarket, thirty years on from the film that changed everything.
It's based on Irvine Welsh's 1993 novel, which first hit the stage as a play by Harry Gibson at the Traverse in 1994 before John Hodge wrote the screenplay for Danny Boyle's 1996 film. This version is a musical, but not a jukebox one — Welsh adapted the book himself and co-wrote the new songs with Stephen McGuinness. It returns to the raw, visceral world of the original story, following a group of young people caught in the grip of addiction and poverty in 1990s Edinburgh. Caroline Jay Ranger directed and developed the production.
The cast brings back the familiar names: Robbie Scott as Renton, Yana Harris as Kelly, Sheridan Townsley as Sick Boy, Kieran Andrew as Spud, Frankie O'Connor as Begbie, Finlay Paul as Tommy, Rebecca McKinnis as Cathy, and Gordon Cooper as Davie.
