Talk by Abdelrahman ElGendy, Shezana Hafiz and Stu Bretherton on state repression, part of Edinburgh's Radical Book Fair 2026.
To Live in Protest: resistance made criminal comes to Assembly Roxy on Thursday 5 November, from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. It's one of the talks making up this year's Radical Book Fair, the annual four-day gathering run by Lighthouse, the independent radical left bookshop on the Southside. The shop itself is open seven days a week and stocks around 10,000 titles across politics, poetry, history and fiction, alongside children's books and feminist, environmental, anti-racist and LGBTQ+ writing. The fair works as a festival of ideas, with more than 20 events, workshops, shared meals and stalls for activists and publishers.
Three speakers bring their own histories of state repression to the room. Abdelrahman ElGendy is a Cairene author and translator who spent six years as a political prisoner in Egypt after opposing the 2013 military coup; he won the 2024 Samir Kassir Press Freedom Award. Shezana Hafiz has campaigned on war-on-terror state oppression since 2003. Stu Bretherton has engaged in direct action for a decade, including the 2022 occupation of the Thales weapons factory in Glasgow. Together they'll be talking through those experiences and the criminalisation of resistance.
