UK premiere screening of the documentary Thorntree, with a discussion with director Isaac Knights-Washbourn and subject Rowan Alba, at the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.
Filmhouse hosts the UK premiere of Thorntree on Thursday 5 November, with a discussion to follow featuring director Isaac Knights-Washbourn and subject Rowan Alba. It's the debut feature from the Edinburgh filmmaker, an intimate portrait of Rowan Alba's supported accommodation for alcohol-dependent men.
The house is built on a particular approach: it rejects conventional abstinence models and lets residents take control of their own recovery without judgement or stigma. The film follows the men's setbacks and triumphs on the road to sobriety, and Knights-Washbourn brings his own history to it — he's the son of a father who struggled with addiction, and he's drawn on that experience to give the film its empathy.
The screening is part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, which has been led by the Mental Health Foundation since 2007. It's grown into one of the world's largest mental health festivals, with more than 180 events across Scotland and a history of championing artists who experience mental health problems. Thorntree is co-presented with the Scottish Documentary Institute.
