Weekly Sunday sketching sessions led by artist Sheena Russell, inspired by the National Museum of Scotland's collections.
The Sunday Sketch is back at the National Museum of Scotland on select Sundays from 20 September 2026 through to 21 March 2027. It's a series of drawing sessions led by artist Sheena Russell, and the whole thing takes place inside the museum's galleries, so you're sketching from the collections on display rather than from a photo or a memory.
Each session runs for two hours, from 14:00 to 16:00, and Russell guides you through a range of drawing activities as you move through the galleries. The idea is to take inspiration from the objects around you, so you'll be looking at the museum's actual holdings and working from them in real time. It's a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon if you've always wanted to sketch but didn't know where to start, and since you're in the galleries, you'll see plenty of other things along the way.

One of the best bits is that all materials are supplied, so you don't need to bring your own pencils, paper, or anything else — you just turn up. The sessions are for ages 16 and over, and they run on select Sundays across the autumn and winter, so you can pick the dates that suit you. Each one lasts two hours, from 14:00 to 16:00, at the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street, EH1 1JF. Tickets are £13.00 to £15.00 per person.
