Science talk by Dr Michael Brooks, part of Seed Talks Edinburgh, on the physics of parallel universes and the multiverse.
Dr Michael Brooks brings The Science of The Multiverse: Do parallel universes exist? to Assembly Roxy on Tuesday 1 December. It's part of Seed Talks Edinburgh, a series of science talks run by Seed Talks, whose London and online sessions are recorded and made available on demand.
The talk looks at the scientific controversy surrounding multiple universes and parallel worlds—ideas that have moved from the fringes of physics into popular culture, from the Marvel cinematic universe to Stranger Things, but are also taken seriously by many scientists. The modern Big Bang theory suggests our Universe may be just one of an effectively infinite number being continuously birthed, while some quantum physicists argue that every time a choice is made the universe branches into two parallel worlds. Multiverses have also been invoked to explain why our Universe seems so well set up for life. Dr Brooks takes the audience on a tour of these different versions of the multiverse and asks whether we will ever be able to access those other worlds. The session closes with an interactive Q&A, so you can put your own questions to him.

Dr Brooks is well-placed to lead the conversation: he holds a PhD in Quantum Physics and writes as a science communicator for New Scientist, The Guardian and The Independent. The talk runs for two and a half hours, with doors opening at 7:00 PM and the talk starting at 7:30 PM. Tickets are ÂŁ17.87, which includes the booking fee, and it's held at Assembly Roxy, 2 Roxburgh Place, Edinburgh EH8 9SU.
