A talk by Dr Saeed Abuzour and a panel of Palestinian academics supporting the GAUZE 2 exhibition, discussing the loss of the Abuzour family.
The Remembrance of Futures Lost is on at Palestine Museum Scotland on Sunday 18 October, from 4pm to 6pm. It's a talk that brings together Dr Saeed Abuzour, a surviving member of the Abuzour family, and a panel of Palestinian academics to discuss the issues raised by the exhibition running around it.
That exhibition is GAUZE 2, by Lancaster-born Scottish artist Christine Dawson, which runs from 13 to 25 October at the museum. It memorialises the 55 members of the Abuzour family who were killed when their home was bombed in an Israeli airstrike on 4 December 2023. The work asks what futures were lost in that one attack, and it pays particular attention to scholasticide — the systematic destruction of education and the intellectual life of a people. The title gauze comes from Gaza, where the fine muslin originates.
So the talk is a conversation about the family and the wider loss the exhibition points to. Dr Abuzour is there as someone who lived through it, and the academics bring the broader context to the table. It's a way of moving from the art on the walls to the actual people and the politics behind it.
