The Piccadilly Sinfonietta, with Warren Mailley-Smith on piano, plays Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending by candlelight at St Giles' Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta play St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 23 April 2027, from 20:00 to 21:30. It's a candlelight concert on the Royal Mile, so the light catches the stone of the building around you while you listen.
The evening centres on Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, which the programme describes as one of the crowning achievements of the composer's genius. It's a big, sweeping work that takes up the bulk of the night, and the Sinfonietta is joined by pianist Warren Mailley-Smith to lead it. The concert rounds off with Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, a lighter, more lyrical piece that sits in contrast to the Tchaikovsky.
Mailley-Smith is also the artistic director of the Piccadilly Sinfonietta, which was founded in 2017 and puts on more than 200 performances a year. He first gained international recognition in 2015 when he performed the complete solo piano works of Chopin from memory.
