The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, on its UK tour, plays Mozart's 20th Piano Concerto with pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason and conductor Mariano Chiacchiarini.
The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra are playing Usher Hall on Wednesday 18 November, as part of their UK tour. They're performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20, with Jeneba Kanneh-Mason on piano and Mariano Chiacchiarini conducting.
It's a German orchestra coming to Edinburgh, and there's a bit of a story to them. They're the orchestra of Stuttgart, the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, and they've been around since 1924, when they were started by unemployed musicians. They were disbanded in 1933 and re-founded after the war, and over the years they've worked under principal conductors like Hermann Hildebrandt, Willem van Hoogstraten, Hans Hörner, Antonio de Almeida and Alexander Paulmüller, before the city of Stuttgart took them over in 1976. These days they put on more than 120 events a year, reach over 100,000 people and play at festivals like 'Beethoven Days', the 'Heidenheim Opera Festival' and the 'Richard Strauss Days Garmisch-Partenkirchen'.
The venue is one you'll know: Usher Hall on Lothian Road. It's been Edinburgh's main spot for visiting national and international orchestras since 1947, and it's also been the home of the Edinburgh International Festival for that long. The hall itself is Beaux Arts, completed in 1914, and it's widely seen as one of the city's architectural gems, with acoustics that get praised as some of the best in Europe.
