A free recital of classical and contemporary Scottish music performed by cellist Veronica Henderson and pianist Elizabeth Mucha.
Veronica Henderson and Elizabeth Mucha are playing at St Giles' Cathedral on Sunday 25 October, as part of the St Giles' at Six recital series. It's a cello and piano duo, and the whole programme is Scottish music, classical and contemporary. The two of them will be performing works by MacCunn, McEwen, Geraldine Mucha, and Isobel Dunlop, along with Neil Mackay's Scena.
That's a fair spread of names to fit into one hour. MacCunn and McEwen are the older, more established Scottish composers here, while Geraldine Mucha and Isobel Dunlop bring in more contemporary voices. Mackay's Scena rounds it out, so you'll hear a good mix of the traditional and the newer side of Scottish writing. The programme is built around composers who all have a connection to Scotland, though they each took very different paths through life, and that's the thread that ties the set together.
It's part of St Giles' at Six, the cathedral's free recital series that brings in local and international performers for classical and contemporary music. If you've been before, you'll know the format: a single hour of music in the middle of the cathedral, with the focus on the performance rather than a full concert hall production. It's a straightforward way to catch a recital without needing to book far in advance or spend an entire evening on it.
