Touring production of the musical about Hollywood's transition to talkies, with the MGM classics 'Good Morning' and 'Make Em Laugh'.
Singin' In The Rain is coming to the Edinburgh Playhouse from 4 to 8 May 2027, as part of a major new tour across the UK and Ireland. It's based on the classic MGM film that starred Gene Kelly, and it's a musical that's been around the stage for a while now.
The story is set in the golden age of Hollywood, when the film business was transitioning from silent movies to talkies. It follows the romance between leading man Don Lockwood and the aspiring actress hired to dub over his on-screen partner's lines. The whole thing is built around that shift to sound, and the music is a big part of it. You'll hear the MGM classics 'Good Morning' and 'Make Em Laugh' alongside the title song and the show's signature splashing puddles dance sequence.
This isn't a brand new production. It transferred to the West End's Palace Theatre in 2012, where it picked up four Olivier Award nominations. The original director, Jonathan Church, and choreographer, Andrew Wright, are reuniting to bring it back to the stage for this tour. The production is known for its sumptuous set designs, and one of the more concrete details is that there's more than 14,000 litres of water on stage for the rain sequences.
