New material comedy night with experienced Scottish comedians testing fresh jokes, a resident compere and up to five acts at Dragonfly.
Cracking New Jokes! returns to Dragonfly on Thursday 12 November, with the show starting at 20:00. It's run by Good Egg Comedy and bills itself as Scotland's top new material comedy night, a room of around 42 comedy fans that regularly sells out.
The format is straightforward: experienced Scottish comedians come on to test fresh material, so you're hearing jokes in their early stages rather than a polished set. They're joined by a rotating resident compere — Ross, Ralph or Cobin — who introduces up to five acts alongside special visiting performers. Some of the names have appeared on television, while others are road-testing material for national tours or weekend comedy clubs.
Because it's a new material night, the line-up changes from one show to the next, and the jokes you hear here might end up in a larger tour later on. The room is small, and the compere's job is to keep things moving and build a rapport with the crowd, which is a good part of the experience. Audience reviews tend to point to the warm, intimate setting as one of the night's strengths.
