The Piccadilly Sinfonietta and pianist Warren Mailley-Smith play Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor and Elgar's Serenade for Strings by candlelight in St Giles' Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are playing St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 24 July 2027, with pianist Warren Mailley-Smith taking the lead. It's part of an evening concert series, and the whole thing is performed by candlelight inside the cathedral's nave on the Royal Mile. The main event is Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, which they describe as a work full of sweeping melody and dramatic piano writing. The evening opens with Elgar's Serenade for Strings before the concerto takes centre stage.
The Sinfonietta has been playing more than 200 performances a year across the UK since it was founded in 2017, and Mailley-Smith has been at the artistic helm throughout. He first gained international recognition in 2015 for performing the complete solo piano works of Chopin from memory, so he's well-versed in the kind of Romantic repertoire that sits at the heart of this programme.
