Retro-futuristic, reactive technology installation by Tinderbox Collective and Ray Interactive, reimagined for Push the Boat Out.
Room To Play is taking over the Pentland Room at The Pleasance from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November, as part of Push the Boat Out, Edinburgh's only poetry festival. This particular iteration is called DIVIDUAL, and it's a creative technology installation that first appeared at Hidden Door earlier this year. It's been reimagined for the festival, so if you caught it then, it's worth a second look.
At its heart, DIVIDUAL is set up as a retro-futuristic tech conglomerate that produces lifestyle technology. It's a collaborative, reactive, multi-artform piece that plays with themes of privacy, observation and data capitalism. The whole thing is run by Tinderbox Collective, who put on an annual course and exhibition project for emerging artists working with technology and the digital, co-directed with immersive design studio Ray Interactive. It's a project that brings together a group of artists rather than a single name, and this one is a collaborative effort between Vix Fowler, Siddharth Biswas, Kirsten Munro, Sarah Ku, Göksu Gündüzalp, Lucas Sheridan and Ukinebo.
Because it's part of Push the Boat Out, it sits within a wider poetry festival that's one of only two in Scotland. The festival is described as fresh, vibrant and innovative, with a focus on increasing the diversity of poetry across the country. DIVIDUAL is one of the pieces that brings that tech-leaning, experimental side to the programme.
