Outdoor winter installation of hand-carved ice sculptures, including Viking legends in the Halls of Valhalla, at -8°C in Edinburgh New Town.
Edinburgh's Christmas: Family Ice Experience opens in Edinburgh New Town on 21 November, and it runs right through to 3 January, so you've got plenty of time to fit it in. It's part of the wider Edinburgh's Christmas programme, which fills the city with twinkling lights, carol singing and crafting workshops throughout the season.
Inside, the experience is built around hand-carved ice sculptures, and the whole place is kept at a frosty -8°C. They hand out jackets and gloves when you arrive, so you don't need to bring your own heavy gear. You're welcomed with a glass of apple juice served in a glass made from ice, and you can either drink it then or save your token for a hot chocolate afterwards.
The 2026 edition takes you into a mythic world of axe-wielding Vikings, with sculptures that recount ancient legends in the Halls of Valhalla, which they describe as the perfect photo moment. It's a walk-through rather than a sit-down thing, so you can take your time with the sculptures at your own pace.
