Piano recital by Warren Mailley-Smith centred on Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, held in the candlelit setting of St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile.
Warren Mailley-Smith brings a candlelit piano recital to St Giles Cathedral on Saturday 29 May 2027, as part of the cathedral's Evening Concert Series. The programme is built around Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which takes the top spot alongside a range of classical and romantic works. It's an early evening concert, running from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm, and the organisers have billed it as a good starting point for anyone who hasn't been to a classical concert before.
Mailley-Smith is a concert pianist who's performed at Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Hall, and has played for members of the British Royal Family on several occasions. In 2015 he made headlines as the first British pianist to perform Chopin's complete solo piano works from memory across a single concert series. He's known for a dazzling technique and a magnetic stage presence, and he plays over 200 performances a year with a repertoire that covers more than 30 piano concertos.
The set moves through a fair few composers before it reaches Gershwin. It opens with Mozart's Turkish Rondo and Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, then shifts to Satie's Gymnopédie and Liszt's arrangement of Schumann's Widmung. From there it's Debussy's Arabesque and Gershwin's Three Preludes, before the night closes with Rhapsody in Blue. It's a broad sweep of piano music, from the classical clarity of Mozart and Beethoven to the impressionism of Satie and Debussy, with the Gershwin taking centre stage.
