Piano recital by Hiroaki Takenouchi, featuring Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, in the candlelit setting of St Giles' Cathedral.
Hiroaki Takenouchi brings a piano recital to St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 24 April, part of the Evening Concert Series. It's a candlelight performance, and the programme runs from Bach through to Gershwin.
The set opens with J.S. Bach's Capriccio on the Departure of the Beloved Brother, BWV 992, followed by Beethoven's Sonata in E flat, Op.81a 'Les Adieux'. Chopin gets two spots: the Waltz in A flat, Op.69 No.1 'Valse de l'adieu' and Etude Op.10 No.3. The evening closes with Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the piece that gives the whole night its title.
Takenouchi is a concert pianist whose repertoire goes well beyond the usual. He's known for his love of the classical masters — Haydn, Beethoven and Chopin in particular — but he keeps them alongside Medtner, lesser-known British composers like Sterndale Bennett and Parry, and contemporary work. As a soloist, he's played Wigmore Hall, Tokyo Opera City and the South Bank Centre, and has given recitals across Europe and North America. In 2022, he released a solo disc on the French label Artalinna featuring Grieg, Medtner and Dupré. He's also edited the published scores of Sherwood's two-piano works, recorded for Lyrita and now available from Nimbus Music Publishing.
