Candlelit solo piano recital by Maiko Mori of Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' and other pieces at St Giles' Cathedral.
Maiko Mori plays St Giles' Cathedral on Saturday 26 June, part of a series of candlelit solo piano evenings on the Royal Mile. It's presented by CityMusic Promotions, who pitch the whole series as an ideal door for first-time classical concert-goers, so it's a good one to bring along someone who doesn't usually do the concert hall thing.
The programme is a broad one. Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue takes centre stage, alongside his Three Preludes. From there it moves to Beethoven's Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, better known as the Pathétique, and then to Grieg, with Homesickness, Op. 57 No. 6, Homeward, Op. 62 No. 6, and Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, Op. 65 No. 6. It's a fair bit of ground to cover in one sitting, and the candlelight does a lot of the heavy lifting for the mood.
Mori is a first-prize winner of the Birmingham International Piano Competition, and she's worked as both an international soloist and a chamber musician. She's played the Purcell Room in London, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and the Kolarac in Belgrade, and has appeared at the Cheltenham, Malta Spring, and Lidköping music festivals. Her playing has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Radio France, and she made her UK concerto debut under Vasily Petrenko.
