Piano recital by Ashley Fripp of Rachmaninov's preludes under the vaulted ceilings of St Giles' Cathedral, aimed at first-time classical concert-goers.
Ashley Fripp brings Rachmaninov to St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 29 January 2027, as part of the Evening Concert Series. It's a piano recital performed by candlelight under the cathedral's vaulted ceilings, and the programme is focused entirely on Sergei Rachmaninov.
Fripp opens with the Prelude in C sharp minor, op. 3 no. 2 β one of Rachmaninov's most famous and dramatic pieces β and then moves into the complete Preludes, op. 23. Between the two, it's a good deal of ground to cover from a single composer, and the candlelight setting is a big part of the draw here.
Fripp is a British pianist who's worked as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician across Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Australia, playing halls like Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein, the Concertgebouw and Wigmore Hall. He's won prizes at more than a dozen competitions, including the Hamamatsu, Birmingham and Leeds International Piano Competitions, and took the Gold Medal from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
