The Piccadilly Sinfonietta, with Warren Mailley-Smith at the piano, plays Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto by candlelight in St Giles' Cathedral.
The Piccadilly Sinfonietta are playing St Giles' Cathedral on Friday 25 June 2027, as part of the cathedral's 'by candlelight' evening series. The concert takes place inside the nave, right on the Royal Mile, and runs from 20:00 to 21:30. It's open to all ages, so it works as a night out with friends or something to bring the kids along to.
The programme is built around Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3, which is widely seen as one of the composer's crowning achievements and one of the great challenges of the classical repertoire. It's a big, demanding piece, and it takes up the bulk of the evening. To round it out, the Sinfonietta will also play Holst's Mars from The Planets and Elgar's Nimrod from The Enigma Variations.
At the piano is Warren Mailley-Smith, who leads the orchestra. He first came to international attention in 2015 when he performed the complete solo piano works of Chopin from memory. The Piccadilly Sinfonietta itself was founded in 2017 and has since played more than 200 performances a year across the UK.
