Tribute show to Queen with West End vocalists and a live rock band, performed by candlelight at the Edinburgh Playhouse.
Queen by Candlelight comes to the Edinburgh Playhouse on Wednesday 4 November, a tribute to Queen performed by candlelight. It's presented by Concerts By Candlelight, and the set brings together some of the band's best-known anthems, with a cast of West End vocalists fronting a live rock band. The whole thing is played by candlelight, which is the hook that gives the night its name.
It's not a new show. This one follows sold-out runs at New York's Carnegie Hall and the London Palladium, so it's arrived in Edinburgh after playing those two. The setlist draws from the songs most people know by heart: Bohemian Rhapsody, It's a Kind of Magic, We Are The Champions and Who Wants to Live Forever are all in there, and the plan is for the audience to sing along with them. It's a singalong, then, rather than a sit-and-listen affair.
On stage, the West End vocalists take the lead on the singing, with the live rock band providing the music behind them. Between the two, they run through the anthems that made Queen a household name, and the candlelight is the setting they're played in. If you've got a few of those songs in your head already, you'll recognise where the night is heading.
