Free poetry evening with readings, a Q&A and a book signing by South African poet Athambile Masola, supported by poets from Interpret magazine.
Athambile Masola is at Typewronger Books on Friday 6 November, for a poetry in translation evening presented by the shop alongside Interpret, Scotland's magazine of international literature. Masola is one of South Africa's brightest rising literary talents, born in Ezibeleni in 1987 and raised in eMonti, East London. She self-translated her poetry from isiXhosa into English, and her debut collection, Inheritance, is published in the UK in a rare isiXhosa-English bilingual edition — one of the vanishingly few books commercially published in Europe in an African language. The original isiXhosa edition, Ilifa, came out in 2021 and won the HSS Award for Poetry in 2022.
Masola's work doesn't stop with her own poetry. She's co-authored the children's books Imbokodo: Women Who Shape Us and Together Apart: The Story of Living in Apartheid with Xolisa Guzula, and she teaches in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Cape Town. On the night, she'll be supported by poets published in Interpret, so there's more to the bill than just her reading.
